The Malaysian Yunus Social Business Network is established to jointly work together to design potential social business model which contributes to the socio-economic development of the country. It will also closely work with other Yunus Social Business Centers around the world, beginning with partners from the Asia Pacific region, to make a significant change in the societies through social business.
The areas of collaboration are partnership in social business for community development projects, addressing social business challenges and other social business promoting activities. Other areas of collaboration include scholarly works in education, capacity and capability building activities for social business education, research and development, co-authorship in reputable journals and book chapters, joint supervision of postgraduate students, staff and student attachment as well as exchange and adjunct lecturer/professor programme.
UTP’s collaboration with Yunus Social Business Centre was first established with the signing of a MoU between UTP and Nobel Laureate Professor Yunus in September 2016. As a result of this MoU, a Yunus Social Business for Community Development Unit for Centre of Social Innovation (CoSI), UTP was set up to foster social business innovation at the university.
CoSI, headed by Associate Professor Dr Shahrina Md Nordin, is a research center that was set up in UTP to conduct community related research such as innovation and technology diffusion into the communities, entrepreneurship for community empowerment, and human-technology interface for community well-being. The center also provides support for the university to conduct feasibility and impactful studies for the implementation of community development projects through its corporate social responsibility, in collaboration with UTP Corporate Services Department.
